An Update From Sharon - August 2024

News and more from SARN Founder Sharon Hurley Hall

Hello friends,

What a month July was - it ended up being WAY busier than I'd anticipated - with courses, speaking engagements, writing and much more. And then of course there were the highs and lows of the news. I don't know about you, but I'm still processing the fact that Black women aren't safe in their own homes even when they call for help. Sonya Massey's murder was a heart-wrenching reminder of that.

Across the pond, the first Black German MP stood down because of racism. And then the biggie: VP Kamala Harris running for US president after Joe Biden exited the race. From the outside, it seems that any alternative to the orange one is the way to go, though I'm hearing that not everyone feels the same, as ably outlined by Paul Ladipo.

Despite the complexities, it was a joy to see Black women come together to support VP Harris, and to see other groups quickly follow where they had led. And it was a not unexpected pain to see the immediate, vicious and consistent misogynoir, which is likely to be ramped up over the next few months. It is WILD in the social media streets - and offline too!

I'm interested to know what anti-racism allyship and advocacy look like for US folx in the moment - a question I'm sure many will be pondering in the immediate future. And I have the same question about advocates in the UK - as I was writing this Global Majority people were being attacked by far right supporters there.

Turning to the rest of the month, here's what's been going on...
