Second Class Citizens
6 questions to ask about your organisation
Hello friends,
Some time last year I was in a meeting and someone happened to mention that Black people were treated as second class citizens within their church. It got me to thinking not just about churches but about organisations as a whole, and so I came up with a few questions we should be asking in our organisations to see if there's an issue we still have to think about.
1. Who's filling the leadership roles?
Is one demographic overrepresented in the leadership of your organisation? In countries where white folx are in the majority (even if it's only barely like the US), white men hold most of the leadership roles. It's disproportionate to their statistical frequency, and plus, isn't it time for a change? And what does your team leadership picture or web page look like?
2. Who's filling the junior roles?
Similarly, who's filling those entry level and support positions? If there's a particular demographic (an unscientific look would suggest these are often Global Majority folx), then again there's a disparity.
