Recommitting To Anti-Racism And Equality

Brief reflections on a three-year journey and what lies ahead

Hello friends,

I’ve been thinking about anti-racism journeys, and mine in particular. About the difference between where I started and how I think now. Want to take a short trip down memory lane with me?

When I think about first getting vocal about racism, I’m never sure where to date the beginning. It could be in the late 90s when I wrote the paper that eventually became Exploring Shadeism. I tend to discount that, only because at the time, it was a one-off.

Or it could be when I first published I’m Not American, But… on Medium. It was the first time, perhaps, that I articulated the solidarity I feel with those facing racism around the world, especially the Black diaspora. I wrote then:

“I feel a kinship with my African American brothers and sisters who woke up on November 9th knowing that their lives didn’t matter to the newest power elite that will be taking over the White House in January 2017.”

We all know how that turned out. :(
