When Black Women Ask For Money
Examining the reaction caused by a request for fair compensation
Hello friends,
There's something I've observed time and time again. And before you ask, no, not everyone does it. But enough people do it for it to have made it to my awareness.
I recently posted about something I was offering, and got rapturous comments about it from people of varying identities. They slid into my DMs, asked questions and got answers, but when it was time to part with the cash they suddenly went quiet.
"The Help" Expectation
It isn't the first time. I'm beginning to lose track of the number of people who want free advice, free consulting, free workshops and free speaking engagements. They don't always come right out and say it, but their actions speak very loudly.
And they're often rude too. Either by ghosting me completely, or by expressing outrage that I should dare to ask for money.
Somewhere in the back of many people's psyches (especially men and women racialised as white) is the idea that Black women are "the help" and should work for no or low pay.
But no more. The time for that is OVER!
